At Basecamp Explorer Masai Mara offers fourteen Double Riverside Tents, all built along the banks of the Talek River, the natural border to the Masai Mara National Reserve. The dense riverbed foliage allows for maximum privacy and comfort, without compromising the view of the Masai Mara National Reserve. With more than 286 identified bird species, you are certain to wake to a symphony of birdsong while staying at Basecamp Explorer Masai Mara.

All tents are fitted with bio-flush toilets, solar-heated safari showers, and a private balcony, were you have direct view of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Family Riverside Tent is the perfect choice for larger groups, or for families travelling with children. The tent has two separate wings, each featuring a double bed with a shared bathroom area. Our Family Riverside Tent offers a larger deluxe balcony to give families or groups a chance to socialize in complete privacy.

Community Development

Basecamp Explorer introduced a concept that seeks to preserve the ecosystem while empowering local communities to improve their livelihoods through capacity building, conservation awareness and women empowerment.

One of the highlights of Basecamp Explorer’s engagement with the local community in the Masai Mara is the Basecamp Masai Brand (BMB), a women’s group that makes bead and leather handicraft to sell to tourists. The social enterprise, which has 158 members, has become so successful that even men from the patriarchial Maasai community turn up with requests that their wives be enrolled as members, according to Jemimah Sairowua, the Project Manager. The attraction is the financial independence that BMB has engendered among women in the Talek area, where Basecamp Masai Mara is located.
